2nd TEST, MIRPUR
That one over of Shakib Al Hasan at the end of the third day, where he picked up 3 wickets in the glimpse of an eye, turned the match in Bangladesh’s favor. Which makes Shakib Al Hasan today’s match turner.
After Bangladesh finished their 2nd innings today at 296, England came on to bat. With a target of 273 to win with 2 and a half days of play left, England was looking very firm in their place because of Alastair Cook and Ben Duckett’s promising opening partnership of 100.
It was the 43rd over of the 2nd innings and England were at 157-6, when Shakib Al Hasan came like a storm and picked up Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid in back to back deliveries. Ben Stokes was the last resort of England for winning this match. Shakib picked him up with a gem of a delivery. Stokes missed the outside edge and the ball hit straight into the off stump.
This was followed by the departure of Adil Rashid for a golden duck in the very next ball, again with very good delivery. Next to go back in the hut was debutant Zafar Ansari also for a duck. Shakib picked up 3 wickets in the 43rd over and England was down to the ground from 157-6 to 161-9 like a house of cards.
The rest of the job was done by Mehedi Hasan Miraz, who has had an excellent series. Shakib Al Hasan finished his spell at 4 for 49.
Bangladesh won the match by 108 runs and leveled the series at 1-1. Though Mehedi picked up majority of the wickets, Shakib’s that one over was really the turning point of the match.
