1st Test, Brisbane

Pakistan tour of Australia was thought to be an Aussie-dominating series. But it started off with almost a nail biting end Test match, where Pakistan approached the Australian target of 490 with great fighting spirit.

After a huge 429 in the first innings, with Steve Smith and Peter Handscomb scoring tons, the bowlers backed the total with perfect efficiency. Pakistan could only make 142 in their first innings.

In their second innings, Australia picked up 202 runs in quick succession, putting up a huge target of 490 for Pakistan to chase down. Steve Smith again scored a quick knock of 63 off 70.

Pakistan chasing 490 in the last innings, to do which they had  to demolish the world record for Test run chase , not to mention the diverse weather conditions for Pakistani players. But Pakistan approached it rather tactfully. Though they lost their first two wickets early in the innings but fought back strongly with good strong partnerships, Azar-Younis, Shafiq-Sarfraz, Shafiq-Amir and Shafiq-Riaz namely.

In the final afternoon, Pakistan had 2 wickets in hand and needed 108 more runs to win. Towards the end Mohammad Amir’s cameo 48 was a real support to Asad Shafiq. But in the end Asad Shafiq went down at 137 by a surprise bouncer by none other than Mitchell Starc. 3 balls later, the last wicket of Yasir Shah was down, leaving Pakistan 40 runs short.

After 4 straight days and nights of domination, the Aussies had to fight hard on the final afternoon to get a 1 up in the 3 match Test series. Asad Shafiq was given man of the match for his outstanding heroics in the fourth innings.
