This coming Thursday, Edgbaston will host the second semi-final of the ICC Champions Trophy to be played between India and Bangladesh. A small rivalry has started between the two teams ever since Bangladesh had beaten the Indians back in the World Cup ’07. The controversial win for the Indians over Bangladesh in the World Cup quarter-finals, just two years ago seems to have added new fuel to fire.
Both teams go into the semi-finals in exquisite form. In their most recent game, which was an unofficial quarter-final, India crushed the South Africans by 8 wickets to secure themselves in semifinal against the Bangladeshi Tigers.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, on the back of an inspiring comeback win against the New Zealanders, where they won the game by 5 wickets, seems pretty confident ahead of the semis.
If we take a look at India’s recent performances in ODIs, we can see that India won 4 of the last 6 matches they played this year. Although one of the losses came very recently against the Sri Lankans, India appears to have come back stronger which they obviously proved through their performance against South Africa. The team has a solid batting line-up and a pretty formidable bowling attack which makes them really difficult to beat.
Bangladesh has played quite a bit of cricket in the last couple of months. If we look at their records in the last six competitive games they have played, we can see that Bangladesh is clearly better at chasing rather than batting first. In fact, all three victories coming in their last six games were results of batting second. So, the Bangladesh will be looking to play to their strengths.
We can conclude from the analysis that India has a greater chance of beating the Bangladesh in the semis. But as we all know by now, cricket is a strange and unpredictable game. One thing is for sure; both teams will be fighting their hearts out to get themselves into the final.
