After having reached the semi-finals of a major international tournament for the first time, nerves seemed to have got the better of the Bangladesh team. The semi-final was played against their arch rival India.
Bangladesh batted well in the beginning but the entire innings collapsed in the last 15 overs. Since Bangladesh’s batting depth is not quite adequate, they could only post 264 runs on the board which was never going to be enough to beat India. India thrashed the Bangladesh bowlers when they won the game by 9 wickets, accelerated by Rohit Sharma’s century.
The skipper of the Bangladesh team, Mashrafe Bin Mortaza had a lot to say about the performance of the team. Mashrafe said,
“Playing in champions trophy is not an easy task. Taking the pressure positively is very important. The pitches were pretty flat and we couldn’t execute our balling strategy because of that. Of-course we need to learn from these mistakes and deliver accordingly next time on similar pitches as the next world cup on 2019 is also at England.”
About the batting performance, the journalists asked “Soumya & Shabbir was a complete failure in the entire tournament. How do you justify their existence in the team and what is your future plan regarding this?” Mashrafe deliberately answered,
“About the batting, I think the boys need to learn from their mistakes and keep focusing on constant improvement. I strongly believe if they are given chances on a regular basis till the next world cup, they are going to recover and deliver the goods.”
Sabbir had a great start but he seemed to have thrown his important wicket away, rather recklessly. In a short tournament like this, players need to hit the ground running and Soumya simply failed to do that.
Though the Bangladeshi fans perceive this tournament as a success. This kind of performance from the team will surely lay a steady foundation for the future.
